Zambia lose to South Korea

Edward Chilufya scored for Zambia but his goal was not enough as the African champions went down 4-1 to hosts South Korea in the Adidas U-20 International Football Tournament at the Cheonan Stadium on Monday, March 27.

It was the first defeat for Chambeshi’s men who were undefeated when they won the Cosafa U-20 Cup in December and the Africa U-20 Nations Cup early this month.

Their unbeaten run was halted by a strong South Korean side but only after they had defeated Ecuador 2-0 in their opening match in Suwon on Saturday.

In this fast paced end-to-end action packed match it was Zambia who almost drew first blood when Chrispine Sakulanda attempted from close range only for his effort to come off the upright in the 6th minute.

However the hosts broke the deadlock in the 31st minute through Barcelona Juvenil A midfielder Paik Seung-ho when the Zambian defence failed to clear Woo Chan-yang’s cross but their lead was shortlived as Edward Chilufya equalised three minutes later following a free-kick by Emmanuel Banda.

Five minutes before the break Seung-ho turned provider, setting up his club teammate Lee Seung-woo who fired home from inside the box for the hosts to take a 2-1 lead at the break.

Seung-woo grabbed his brace in the 68th, scoring South Korea’s third goal when he chipped the ball over an out of position Mangani Banda into an unguarded net.

Chambeshi’s men were made to rue their wasted chances as there was time for a fourth goal for the hosts who scored through Lim Min-hyeok in the 78th.

Zambia play their last match against Honduras on Thursday, March 30 at the Jeju World Cup Stadium at 16h00 (09h00 CAT).
