Nkwazi leave it late to draw with Warriors

Nkwazi left it late as they came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Kabwe Warriors in a Week 29 match played at the Godfrey Chitalu Stadium on Friday.

Jacob Phiri scored late in the first half from a deflected free kick to give the hosts a 1-0 lead at the break but substitute Mwila Kabwe equalised in additional time to break the hearts of the Warriors who have not won at home since 22 July.

Before the opener, it was Nkwazi who looked purposeful with early chances falling to Justin Shonga and Steward Chikandiwa.

Shonga and Chikandiwa’s early efforts from free kicks went off target but the latter’s driven effort at the top of the box had Kabwe Warriors goalkeeper Lawrence Mulenga struggle to make a save in the 12th minute.

Chikandiwa had another good chance to break the deadlock on 40 minutes but his flicked header came off the crossbar following a corner delivered by Shonga.

The hosts also had chances through Moonga Chilimba who was unmarked at the far post in the second minute but his free header went wide.

In the 19th minute Jacob Phiri forced a save out of Kafwaya Makasa from a free kick and a minute later Makasa was forced to make another save from Martin Daka.

With chances far and wide in the second half, the equalizer could be attributed to goalkeeper Lawrence Mulenga who parried Justin Shonga’s throw-in into the path of Kabwe whose effort on target took a heavy bounce but Mulenga’s recovery save only managed to force the ball into the net.

The result means that Warriors moved into sixth position with 40 points supplanting Red Arrows on goal difference while Nkwazi moved into ninth position after they supplanted Napsa Stars into tenth on goal difference.

Week 29 action continues with five matches on Saturday and three more on Sunday.
