We will beat the drop, says Mufulira Wanderers striker

Mufulira Wanderers striker Ben Chengo believes that his team has a good chance of surviving relegation and reckons that every match until the end of the season will be like a cup final.

Chengo spoke to fazfootball.com following his team’s 2-2 draw at home to Nkana on Sunday.

Ronald Kampamba had given the visitors the lead on 11 minutes but Chengo levelled matters just before half time to score his first goal of the campaign.

The visitors restored their lead in the 85th minute through Walter Bwalya only for Joseph Kasongo to draw the hosts level at the death.

The result pushed Wanderers to 28 points but kept them in 15th position on goal difference from Green Eagles in 14th.

“It was a great feeling to score the equaliser after conceding an early goal. Looking at our position on the table, I put my life on that game because I played as a second striker. The new coach played me at right back in our previous matches so this was my chance to help the team by scoring a goal. From now on until the end of the season every match is like a cup final so we are playing cup ga no room for errors.”

Chengo believes that his goal will go a long way in helping Wanderers in their survival quest. The 26 year old has previously been relegated from the Super League with Kabwe Warriors.

“What we are going through brings back memories of my time with Kabwe Warriors when we got relegated. That time I failed to help the team but I stayed to help them back to the Super League. I always want to win. I want to be associated with a winning team and hopefully one day I will be a champion. It is heartbreaking what we are passing through but I don’t see us being relegated,” said Chengo.

Ironically, Green Eagles and Mufulira Wanderers’ next two points will confirm relegation for rivals Mufulira Blackpool.

Mufulira Wanderers run-in will see them face Power Dynamos (A), Nakambala Leopards (A), Lumwana Radiants (H), Napsa Stars (A), Zesco United (H) and Red Arrows (A).
