Power Dynamos have won the 2016 Samuel Zoom Ndhlovu Charity Shield following a 1 – 0 win over 2015 Barclays Cup winners Green Buffaloes in the final played at Nkoloma Stadium on Wednesday.

Larry Bwalya scored the only goal of the match with a perfectly placed curler from inside the box after he was found unmarked at the far post by Kelvin Mubanga who had some work to do before passing the ball.

Power Dynamos assistant coach Anderson Phiri told fazfootball.com in a post match interview that winning the Charity Shield was a morale booster for the new season.

“I congratulate Green Buffaloes for putting up a splendid job; they played well though in the ended we finished on top. This was our prayer and it was answered today. We really needed silverware in our cabinet and gives us momentum to start afresh in the league.

“This win is a morale booster because we have played well in the two matches we played in the Charity Shield. I hope that the boys will carry on like this and put up a similar performance when we play Napsa Stars on Saturday,” said Phiri.

Meanwhile Green Buffaloes coach Bilton Musonda said his team wasted a lot of chances in front of goal.

“Power Dynamos played good football so this is a wake-up call for us because we failed to score and in the process we conceded. But we have to recover quickly from this so that on Sunday we can collect maximum points against Green Eagles,” Musonda said.

The Samuel Zoom Ndhlovu Charity Shield marks the start of the Zambian football league season. Proceeds are donated by the Republican President to a charity of his choice on behalf of the Zambian football family under the umbrella of the Football Association of Zambia.
