As the Chipolopolo boarded the Angola Airlines plane for Benguela, midfielder Felix Katongo sent the bus into laughter as he cried out that the result against Cameroon had denied them a chance to empty the accountants’ money bag.
The team has lifted itself well since the game and talk among the players has been that of greater determination to do whatever they can to triumph.
“When we scored against Cameroon, I’m sure the accountant was subtracting from his bag, when they equalised, he was preparing for half the amount. He must have folded his hands after Cameroon scored a second but we came back again,” said Felix amid laughter and some applause. He added: “I want to assure you that we will get the full amount on Thursday”, referring to the bonuses the team is awarded for a victory or draw.
Zambia needs an outright win against Gabon on Thursday night to qualify .
The Chipolopolo will return to Lubango should the team finish top of Group D, but will stay in Benguela for a quarterfinal clash against Group C winners should the team finish Group D as runners-up. Likely opponents include Egypt and Nigeria or Mozambique.
