Chipolopolo netted four times as the Zambia national team blazed past 2010 Fifa World Cup finalists, South Korea, in a warm up match played at the Rand Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday afternoon.
Felix Katongo’s wonder from outside the box on 9 minutes opened the account as Herve Renard’s men unwrapped their goal scoring magic wand – a feat the millions of faithful Zambian followers will hope the team will maintain as they head into Lubango, where they will face Tunisia, Cameroon and Gabon in Group D stage matches.
“I wanted to score three but because of the knock I received I could not continue. But I will reserve those for Angola,” said Felix Katongo. Herve Renard pulled the striker off after he suffered a knock just before the half-time break.
Team doctor, Joseph Kabungo, allayed fears the knock might be serious by stressing that taking Felix out was a precaution and that the Mamelodi Sundowns play-maker will be fit for the opening clash against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia.
Skipper Chris Katongo provided Rainford Kalaba with a perfect pass after some good work on the right flank for the Portuguese match-maker to push Chipolopolo 2-0 up. The Koreans pulled one back 10 minutes before the break and took the game to half-time with a tight score.
Dominating play for long spells, with some coordinated and crisp passing engineered from the centre by hard working William Njobvu, Thomas Nyirenda and Kalaba, the Chipolopolo took the game beyond the World Cup finalists when Chamanga tapped in from close range.
Noah Chivuta cemented his spot kick credentials when he converted from the penalty spot even after he was asked to retake the shot, to make it 4-1. This was after Emmanuel Mayuka’s fine run could only be stopped by a crude tackle in the box. There was still time for the Koreans to pull another consolation. Koo, lobbed from outside the box to beat Kennedy Mweene, who had earlier thwarted them with a fine save from close range.
