Zambia bow out of U20 World Cup

The Zambia U-20 national team have bowed out of the FIFA World Cup after falling 3-2 to Italy in a thrilling encounter that needed extra time.

Zambia had been flying high at the tournament but fell to an extra time strike by Luka Vido who headed home a Federico Dimarco corner with the match tied at 2-all.

Patson Daka had given Zambia a dream start in the fourth minute when he finished off a move that started Edward Chilufya through to Enock Mwepu before Emmanuel Banda set up for the FC Liefering striker.

Italy was reduced to 10 men when Giuseppe Pezzella saw red after getting a second yellow card for a foul on Edward Chilufya.

The Azurri shook off their numerical disadvantage when Ricardo Orsolini headed home the equalizer in the 51st minute from a Giuseppe Panico cross.

But the African champions dusted themselves off with Fashion Sakala hitting the back of the net in the 84th minute.

With Zambia dropping guard in the final five minutes, Italy equalized in the 88th minute through Dimarco who smashed in a powerful shot from a set piece on the edge of the box.

At the close of 90 minutes the two sides were tied at 2-2 but the Italians hit the back of the net in the 111th minute through Luka Vido who headed in a Demarco corner.

The Zambian side set the record of a quarter final appearance for any age group side in Zambia.

Enroute to the quarterfinals Zambia beat Portugal (2-1), Iran (4-2) before losing 1-0 to Costa Rica.

In the second round they edged Germany 4-3 before losing to Italy 3-2.
