The Zambia U-20 Men’s Football National Team stormed the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup in Korea by sweeping aside powerhouse Germany in a seven goal thriller that saw the African champions emerge 4-3 winners.
Germany went ahead in the 36th minute when Philip Ochs rocketed home a free kick that gave Mangani Banda in the Zambian goal with no chance.
The two sides went to the break with Germany leading 1-0 but the Zambian side came breathing fire in the second half with Emmanuel Banda smashing in the equalizer in the 49th minute.
Substitute Edward Chilufya had charged down the flank sending in a delightful cross that Enock Mwepu fumbled in the box but it fell mercifully to Banda who drove it in powerfully.
The Zambians were looking re-invigorated with Mwepu laying Fashion Sakala who with customary aplomb hit the target.
With the tide changing the Germans made changes to their set up but it was Zambia that found the target when Mwepu turned finisher of a Patson Daka assist putting the African champions ahead with a 3-1 lead.
The Germans hit back with Serda making it 3-2 before an extra time equalizer by Arweiler made it 3-3 pushing the match to extra time.
With the first half of extra time producing no goals there was an unlikely hero in Shemmy Mayembe who drove home a powerful shot in the 107th minute to give Zambia a 4-3 lead that they hang on to until the final whistle.
Zambia will wait for winner between Italy and France in the knockout stages whom they will face on Sunday.
Coach Beston Chambeshi will be happy that his side reached a historic milestone after previous squads ended in the first round (1999) and second round (2007).
