Zesco United held, Eagles claw Buffaloes

League leaders Zesco United extended their unbeaten run to seven matches and the gap at the top to three points following a goalless draw at Napsa Stars in a week 17 match played at Woodlands Stadium on Sunday.

Since back to back losses to Nkwazi and Forest Rangers on 3rd and 14th June respectively, Zesco United had gone from strength to strength recording six wins before Sunday's draw.

Napsa Stars dominated possession in the early exchanges and looked like the side likely to break the deadlock but the first chance fell to the visitors when Kondwani Mtonga fired a powerful low shot from inside the area on 18 minutes but it was saved by Phillip Banda.

Three minutes later, it was Banda who kept the scores even when he came out to deny Winston Kalengo who had broken through after being set up by Jackson Mwanza.

The first shot on target for the hosts arrived on the half hour mark by way of Peter Mwangani who with his back to goal, turned Dauti Musekwa in and out before unleashing a shot which was heading into the top right side of the net before Jacob Banda saved.

In the second half, Davy Kalandanya's pace down the left flank continued to keep Zesco United defenders on their toes and twice came close to breaking the deadlock only for his efforts to be blocked.

With action concentrated in the middle of the pitch, there were few chances after the break and there was no goal to record for either side after the final whistle.

The draw means that Zesco United still lead the standings with 39 points but now only have a three-point margin over second place Power Dynamos.

In the early kick off played at the same venue Green Eagles, who despite playing the last 15 minutes with a man down, had no trouble of finding the back of the net as on form Adamson Mulao opened the scoring in the 36th minute for his eighth goal of the season. Spencer Sautu provided the assist.

Mulao is now joint top goal scorer along with Jimmy Ndhlovu and Winston Kalengo.

Man-of-the-match Sautu was the provider once again as the visitors increased their advantage to two goals with substitute Chansa Katongo finding the back of the net in the 82nd minute, three minutes after replacing Boyd Mwangelwa.

Former Konkola Mine Police striker Tapson Kaseba scored in additional time when he beat the offside trap following a throw-in to fire a low shot beyond Fred Silwamba and ensure the Choma-based outfit did a double on Green Buffaloes this season, having won the reverse fixture 1 - 0 on March 21.

Sunday's double header at Woodlands Stadium concluded two days of action that saw 18 goals scored in eight matches and three players Emmanuel Banda (Nchanga Rangers), Luka Lungu (Power Dynamos) and Moses Siyanda (Nakambala Leopards) scoring a brace each.
