Zesco switch off Power

Zesco United defeated Power Dynamos 2 – 0 at Arthur Davies Stadium in a rescheduled week 12 match on Thursday to go top of the MTN FAZ Super League with 32 points from 14 matches.

The goals were scored by Winston Kalengo and Jonas Sakuwaha.

Arthur Davies Stadium was filled to capacity in this fixture but the match was marred in the last five minutes by fans who threw objects on to the pitch leading to a 13 minute stoppage.

Zesco United play Zanaco next weekend in another rescheduled fixture.

Zesco United started the match looking for an early goal and it did not take them long to win the first corner of the match.

Misheck Chaila tested Joshua Titima from range and won a corner inside the first minute.

From the resulting corner Bernard Mapili almost opened the scoring but his effort from point blank range was saved by an alert Titima.

In the 12th minute Zesco United came close again but Clatous Chota who was through on goal after being set up by Jackson Mwanza could only send his tame effort wide of target from inside the box.

Winston Kalengo did not need long to open the scoring and he was on hand to score his eighth league goal in the current campaign when he nodded home a cross by Bernard Mapili in the 23rd minute.

On 33 minutes, Kalengo again found space behind the defense but somehow under pressure from Titima could not direct his effort on target.

Power rarely threatened but they had chances wasted by Martin Phiri and Kelvin Mubanga in the first half.

Phiri was through on goal in the 21st minute but he could only shoot over the crossbar.

On 34 minutes Phiri saw his header sail wide of target while Mubanga went for Power instead of accuracy as he attempted to beat Jacob Banda from inside the area.

The second half was evening balanced with the hosts asserting themselves more and chasing an equaliser which never came.

Instead it was the visitors who increased their advantage through substitute Jonas Sakuwaha following good work by Jackson Mwanza.

Zesco United assistant coach Tenant Chembo said defeating Power Dynamos in their own task was never an easy task and praised his players for the victory.

“Beating Power Dynamos is not easy. We laboured to score two goals. Credit must goal to the boys; they did well by playing according to instructions,” Chembo said.
