Lwandamina delighted with win over Namibia

Coach George Lwandamina was delighted as Zambia progressed to the second qualification round of the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN) following a 6-5 victory on post-match penalties at the expense of Namibia after the tie had ended 3 - 3 over two legs.

Lwandamina told in a post-match interview that the victory was good for his team's confidence in upcoming matches.

A goal apiece from Festus Mbewe and Winston Kalengo secured a 2-1 victory in the second leg at Nkoloma Stadium to mirror the result registered by Namibia in the first leg a fortnight ago.

"We are all happy. For sure even yourselves (the media) are happy as Zambians," Lwandamina said as he drew laughter from journalists.

"This victory will restore confidence in our players; they played under a lot of pressure after losing twice to the same team this year.

"They worked hard for this victory and I am sure it will inculcate the much needed confidence in our players."

On May 24 Zambia as defending champions were eliminated by Namibia at the quarter final stage of the 2015 Cosafa Cup 5 - 4 and a month later lost 2 - 1 to the same team in the first round first leg of the 2016 African Nations Championship qualifier.

Lwandamina said his team had practiced penalties in training.

"We prepared for penalties because the competition demands them in the event of a tie."

Zambia's spot kicks were converted by Kondwani Mtonga, Buchizya Mfune, Moses Phiri, Christopher Munthali, Benedict Chepeshi and goalkeeper Danny Munyao kept out Denzil Hoaseb's kick before Winston Kalengo scored the winning penalty.

Joseph Zimba's effort hit the crossbar.

While Namibia's captain Heinrich Isaacks and Denzil Hoaseb failed to convert their team's spot kicks their team mates Denis Tjetjinda, Jodlin Kamatuka, Itamunua Keimuine, Absalom Iimbondi and Ananias Gebhardt were all clinical with their kicks.

Zambia will host Mozambique in the second qualifying round first leg match on October 17 before travelling to Maputo on the 24.

The winner of the tie over two legs will qualify for the 2016 African Nations Championship to be hosted by Rwanda in January.
