Zambia reach cosafa cup plate final

The Zambia national football team has reached the 2015 Cosafa Cup plate final following a comfortable 3 – 0 victory over West African guests Ghana at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace on Wednesday.

And Green Buffaloes midfielder Allan Mukuka was voted the man of the match. Two goals in the 25th and 29th minutes from Bonwell Mwape and Aaron Katebe respectively gave Zambia a 2 – 0 lead before the half hour mark and Nathan Sinkala put the icing on the cake three minutes before the break.

Coach Honour Janza said he was happy with the reaction and character his team showed following the victory.

“It is a good result because every coach wants positive results. Positive results motivate the boys and it also gives you a lot of hope for tomorrow,” Janza said.

“The character was positive; we were able to react positively when the opponent had the ball, we had to close them down as quickly as possible and to deny them space because if we gave them space they would have dominated and punished us.

“The boys pressed high and disturbed the build up by Ghana. Like I said earlier, we couldn’t defend the cup but we are going to use the tournament to prepare for what is coming ahead of us.

“And playing against Ghana has given us some insight; it was good opposition, it exposed us and we also learnt one or two things.

“So it is good especially that we are coming from a loss against Namibia. A win is good for the boys to believe in themselves,” he said.

And Ghana coach Maxwell Konadu whose team failed to register victory at the tournament said he was disappointed with the result.

“We are disappointed at the moment but that is football. Sometimes you will do everything but your best will not be enough,” Konadu said.

“I think we didn’t do bad especially in the second half. But we can’t take away anything from the Zambians. I think they played well and I wish them good luck.”

Zambia will now face the winner of the plate semi final between South Africa and Malawi. The plate final is scheduled for Friday, May 29.
