Zanaco seize top with hard fought victory

Zanaco returned to the top of the league standings with a hard fought 3 -2 victory over Mufulira Wanderers in a rescheduled week eight fixture played at Sunset Stadium on Wednesday.

A goal at the stroke of half time by Augustine Mulenga and an own goal in first half stoppage time gave the hosts a comfortable lead at the break and Mathews Macha won the match when he scored at the death after Moses Lolozi and Taonga Bwembya had pulled the visitors level in the second half.

Wanderers were handed a life line when they were awarded a penalty following a handball inside the area by Salulani Phiri ten minutes after the restart.

Lolozi stepped up to convert the resulting penalty and the comeback was completed seven minutes later when Bwembya scored directly from a free kick.

But all the efforts by Wanderers were not enough as substitute Mathews Macha came on to give the hosts a late winner.

That victory sees Zanaco reclaim top spot with 21 points while Wanderers dropped into sixth position level on 14 points with their next opponents Green Buffaloes who defeated Napsa Stars in the other rescheduled fixture played at Imboela Stadium on the same day.

Buffaloes scored their goals through Diamond Chikwekwe who found the back of the net in the third minute and Timothy Mbewe who increased the advantage on 55 minutes.

The defeat left Napsa Stars firmly in the relegation zone with seven points.
