Press Statement

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has learned with deep shock, sorrow and sadness the death of former Chipolopolo international defender and Mufulira Wanderers Football Club coach Harrison ‘Wawa’ Chongo. FAZ is distressed to learn of his untimely death Thursday 12th May 2011.

FAZ offers its sincere condolences to Chongo’s family, Mufulira Wanderers FC and Zambia as a whole. Further, the national soccer governing body would like to call upon the football fraternity, football followers, fans, official and all stakeholders to pray for Chongo’s soul and his family.

Speaking on receiving news of Chongo’s death, FAZ President Kalusha Bwalya said: “We played with Wawa for a long time and he was a key member of the Zambia National Team and played an important role especially in the aftermath of the Gabon Disaster. I’m really saddened as it devastating to learn that ourr colleague, friend, brother and man I personally have fought so many battles with, passing away tragically. We were recently in touch and you could see his determination to get his career as a coach going again. I remember him attending a FAZ and CAF coaching course where we last met and interacted a great deal. Personally, it is a very sad, very sad loss and I think the football community and nation will receive this news with sadness and a deep sense of loss because we have lost a great warrior who did his country proud , he will be sorely missed”

Wawa was part of the Zambia National Soccer Team which contested the final match of the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations finals; losing only to Nigeria as the Chipolopolo rose from the ‘ashes’ of the fatal April 28 1993 Gabon plane crash which claimed the lives of 30 players, officials and flight crew of the ZAF Military plane.

Recently, the Football Association of Zambia incorporated Wawa in basic and high level coaching courses and was among over 30 coaches who took instructions in the latest men’s course which was held in Lusaka in March/April. At the time of his death, Wawa was coach of Mufulira Wanderers FC, one of Zambia’s legendary teams which are competing in the FAZ Division I North League.
