Africa Cup of Nations co-hosts Equatorial Guinea coach Gilson Paulo has reiterated his side’s desire to win their final Group A game against Zambia in Malabo on Sunday evening, despite having already qualified for the quarterfinals.
Back-to-back wins over Libya and Senegal have propelled the Nzalang Nacional into the last eight of the Nations Cup on their tournament debut.
It is a remarkable achievement by the national team, made all the more laudable by the fact that Paulo has only been in charge a few weeks, having been appointed earlier this month after Henri Michel’s resignation in December.
Yet the Brazilian tactician insists that Equatorial Guinea have not yet peaked at the tournament and can pick up a third successive win when they take on Zambia.
"Senegal is a very good team with talented players,” he said in the wake of Nzalang Nacional’s dramatic 2-1 win over the Teranga Lions on Wednesday night.
“We did a good job with the win but we are not there yet.
“We want to win all our matches to finish top in our group.”
The encounter between the co-hosts and Chipolopolo kicks-off at 20h00 SA time on Sunday evening.
