Last eight beckons for Chipolopolo

Zambia will be aiming for a place in the knockout stages of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations whilst Libya will be trying to get their campaign back on track. These countries will clash in a Group A fixture on Wednesday afternoon at the Estadio de Bata in Equatorial Guinea, kick-off at 18h00 SA time.

Zambia upset tournament favourites Senegal 2-1 through goals from Emmanuel Mayuka and Rainford Kalaba in their opening fixture and will hope to again show the fight and team cohesion which was evident in that match.

Chipolopolo, who are making their 15th AFCON appearance, came into this tournament aiming for at least a semifinal spot and their victory over the Senegalese has sent warning signs to their rivals in the tournament.

Libya, on the other hand, who were surprise qualifiers due to the political instability in their country, ironically have not won a single match at the AFCON since defeating Zambia when they hosted the tournament 30 years ago.

They extended their winless streak when they conceded a late goal and lost 1-0 to co-hosts Equatorial Guinea last Saturday in the opening match of the biennial three-week African football showcase.

Libya coach Marcos Paqueta believes that his North African side has still got a lot to say with regards to their future participation in the tournament.

"This is not the end of the story," insisted former Saudi Arabia handler Paqueta, "because we still have two group matches to play and every game is a different story.

"We are going to face Zambia and Senegal – the best two teams in our group – and it is going to get harder. My team wants to bring joy to the Libyan people after all the suffering they went through last year."

Zambian players Isaac Chansa and Kennedy Mweene have both rejoined training with the rest of their teammates after suffering knocks in the team’s last fixture on Saturday night. Both players came through Monday’s training session without any problem.

"I can assure our nation we will not underestimate Libya, who we failed to defeat in two qualifiers for this tournament," stressed Zambian midfielder Chansa.

"The atmosphere within our camp is very good," he added, "and we are confident of going very far in this tournament with the coach demanding nothing less than a semifinals place."

The Zambians know that maximum points will seal qualification for a last eight spot and thus give them a potential chance of avoiding tournament favourites Cote d’Ivoire, whilst Libya are fighting to stay in the tournament.
